Although this may be the most subjective attribute of our I2 Philosophy, it may also be the most important. "Feel" actually combines what we hear, see and touch. The physics of golf demonstrate that the shafts role is to transfer energy from the player to the club head, which ultimately is then transferred to the ball. It is a complex series of events and the energy "conversion" never happens with perfect efficiency meaning some "energy" remains in the club after impact. This residual energy tends to bounce around until it dissipates (or damps) and therefore much of what we "feel" in a golf shot is actually post-impact, but it influences us nonetheless. This damping effect is the shaft attribute that equates most to "feel" and it influences both the high frequency vibrations we hear and the lower frequency levels some people feel.
One of the most effective damping mechanisms available is called "Constrained Layer Damping" and is the very core of our patented Exogrid® Technology. ExoGrid® effectively fuses two very different materials together and when excited (like when ringing a bell, or hitting a golf shot) the dissimilar materials tend to try and cancel each other, effectively damping the residual energy. Tour Players like to describe the phenomena as a very "solid" or "stable" feeling. Our Helix Tour™ shafts, based on ExoGrid,® provide a unique feel, unlike anything else you've ever swung. We've also managed to eliminate the "harsh" feel historically associated with low-torque shafts. |
